Brands Brace for Sales, Revenue Dips Among Coronavirus Spread

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is affecting every industry, and tanking the global economy as a whole. Even in the wine and spirits world, it’s causing profit loss.

Distilleries have canceled tours, whiskey trading is experiencing losses of more than 200 million, bars in Asia are quiet, and auction houses are halting selling their top whiskeys.

How Data Visualization Can Help During the Coronavirus Pandemic

There is no more important time for health organizations to use all of the data available to them than in a health crisis. The data can help health officials stay informed, but it can also help inform a response – where and how to intervene. As a result, the care that is being provided can improve and lives can be saved.

The way that data is presented can also make a difference. Many different organizations are using visualizations of the current coronavirus that allow the data be viewed and understood more easily in order to improve the response. Here are some of the data visualizations of the COVID-19 pandemic that can help everyone stay informed, from those worried about whether the virus will affect them to the health officials trying to stop it. New Survey: Only 1 in 5 Healthcare Orgs. Use Analytics for Population Health

Population HealthToday, HIMSS Analytics and Dimensional Insight released some surprising new survey results about the state of clinical analytics at healthcare organizations. While most organizations say they are using analytics in clinical areas, reality shows that purely clinical projects are not a top focus area for most hospitals and health systems.

In fact, the survey revealed that only 1 in 5 healthcare organizations (21.6%) is using analytics for population health. What else did the survey reveal? Let’s take a look. (more…)

Hot Topic: How Analytics Can Help During a Measles Outbreak

MeaslesToday on the blog, we are starting a new column called “Hot Topic” in which we’ll take a look at events that are making headlines and examine the data or analytics implications. We’re going to start with a health topic that has been front and center in the news over the last few weeks: the measles outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says measles was “eliminated” from the U.S. in 2000, but there have been an increasing number of cases lately – with hundreds in the first few months of 2019. Let’s examine the issue and see how organizations can use analytics to help manage the outbreak.

Customer Spotlight: Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare SystemOver the five years I’ve worked at Dimensional Insight, I’ve met several of our customers either in person at one of our user events or over the phone as I’ve talked to them about customer success stories. It’s only recently that I’ve started to go out on the road to meet our customers where they work – and this has provided me with a whole new perspective as I write our user stories.

I visited Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMHS) on a sunny California day in January (the perfect respite from what was then brutally cold Boston!) to talk to Audrey Parks, CIO, and Tim France, programmer. What followed was a great conversation about the challenges the health system faces, where healthcare is going, and how Diver can help the organization get there. Here are some highlights. (more…)

Healthcare Consolidation: What to Watch For in 2018

Healthcare Consolidation: What to Watch For in 2018Healthcare consolidation is on a tear, with several massive deals at the end of 2017, including CVS-Aetna and UnitedHealth Group buying one of the largest U.S. physician groups. Hospitals are merging in ever-larger deals, creating multi-state powerhouses. The number of U.S. hospitals that are part of a system rose nearly 20% between 2006 and 2016, according to the American Hospital Association (AHA).

What to Consider as You’re Starting to Measure Population Health

Take any population – any group of people. Let’s say you have a group of healthcare professionals in one room. They have in common their area of work. But if you were to ask that group of people what “population” they belong to, you might get a variety of different answers. Red Sox fans, for instance – or Cubs fans. Or something else entirely, such as gender, age, residency, political leanings, etc.

That’s the thing with populations. There are myriad ways to define them. Sometimes they are easy to define, but most times they are not. There is a lot of overlap in populations, especially when it comes to the healthcare environment. In this blog post, we’ll talk about some of the biggest challenges when it comes to dealing with populations within the healthcare environment – what’s known as population health management. We’ll also look at some examples of how you can use population health information and apply it to solve real-life problems. (more…)
