Frequently Asked Questions
Logistics Analytics — Answered
Common questions about logistics and supply chain analytics with Dimensional Insight, answered from our published pages and customer case studies.
Logistics analytics basics
What does Dimensional Insight do for logistics and supply chain companies?
The Dimensional Insight Platform integrates data from across enterprise and supply chain networks, standardizes it, builds metrics and KPIs on it, and visualizes the results. The aim is one trusted view, with governed business rules and measures, so teams can get products from point A to point B with better insight.
Which logistics KPIs can be tracked?
The platform manages KPI definitions centrally, with role-based access. Customer examples show the range: CDTA tracks 23 KPIs across eight departments, including ridership, revenue, cost and on-time performance, Whistl users report down to item number, item weight and processing time, and Royal Lemkes tracks turnover, margin, time to delivery and sustainability.
Data and integration
Which systems and data sources does the platform connect to?
The platform connects to internal and external sources, including financial, operational and supply chain systems, standardizes the data, and stores it in Spectre, its columnar data engine. Customer examples show what this looks like in practice. CDTA combined ticketing, route planning, and vehicle-management data (GPS, actual boarding times, operator driving behavior). Corrib Oil combined fleet management, truck loading, fuel stock monitoring, a fuel card system, a loyalty program, clocking, payroll and sales invoices; its payroll story adds driver proof-of-delivery trip files and ERP sales order and payment data. Royal Lemkes brought together inventory, delivery and contract management systems, points of sale and ERP applications.
Can we replace manual, spreadsheet-based reporting?
Corrib Oil printed reports from each system every week and compiled them into one Excel file on Monday mornings, which was slow and error-prone. Diver Platform put the data from separate shops and systems in one place. After Corrib upgraded to Spectre, overnight processing fell from 5.5 hours to 12 minutes, which the company reports as a 96% improvement. Corrib Oil’s payroll automation reports a 95% improvement, about 55 hours a week. Expert Ireland cut report production time by 98%, from about a day to about 10 minutes.
What if we already have a data warehouse?
Whistl, a UK post and parcels company, had a Microsoft-based data warehouse that was too costly and could not provide detailed reports. Dimensional Insight Netherlands consolidated that warehouse and its existing Diver Platform into one new data warehouse. Both ran in parallel for a week before the old one was switched off, two months ahead of schedule. Whistl reports a 68% cost reduction.
Trust, governance and AI
How do we make sure everyone uses the same KPI definitions?
Measure Factory is an optional module that works as an automated business-rules engine. It lets you define measures once, apply the same logic across sources, track definition changes over time, and enforce the rules when data sets are built. FREJA Transport & Logistics used it to show each measure’s description on every page, so users can see how a figure is calculated and definitions stay consistent wherever they appear.
We already use Power BI. Do we still need Dimensional Insight?
Many organizations use both. Power BI handles visualization, while Diver Platform defines and applies the underlying rules and KPIs. Power BI can connect to Diver data sets through the DI-ODBC driver. In the architecture FAQ’s words: “Power BI decides how things look. Diver Platform decides what they mean.”
How does the platform support AI and advanced analytics?
Its main role is to provide the governed data and KPI layer that AI initiatives build on. The Logistics page also lists scenario modeling, predictive analytics and forecasting among its advanced analytics features. Optional embedded AI features, such as forecasting and chatbots, exist in specific applications.
Can the platform help with regulatory and compliance reporting?
The Logistics page lists complying with legislation and reporting to governing bodies as a capability. Corrib Oil gives a concrete example: an automatically updated monthly report in the format Ireland’s revenue requirements specify, covering thousands of sales invoices that the company says would be impossible to produce manually on time.
Results and customer stories
What results have logistics customers achieved?
Published results are strongest on cost and reporting time.
- Whistl (UK post and parcels): 68% lower cost than its previous data warehouse, and about 200 employees run ad hoc reports without BI-expert help.
- Corrib Oil (fuel distribution and retail, Ireland): overnight processing cut from 5.5 hours to 12 minutes (a 96% improvement), plus an automated monthly revenue report, and payroll automation with a 95% improvement (about 55 hours a week).
- Expert Ireland (retail, Ireland): 98% reduction in report production time, from about a day to about 10 minutes.
- Royal Lemkes (supply chain; 791 suppliers, 2,523 outlets, 34 countries): new models built in under a day, sync time down 50%, and report load time cut from 8.6 to 1.6 seconds.
- FREJA Transport & Logistics (road freight, Denmark): consistent KPI definitions across the business, and its key account team receives its report first thing each morning so it can act on shipment problems.
- Capital District Transportation Authority (public transit, Albany, NY): tracks 23 KPIs across eight departments, including on-time performance against an internal 75% target.
Fit and getting started
What does an implementation look like?
Published stories show several patterns. CDTA’s partner Zight worked in four phases: define the data strategy and KPIs, design dashboards with KPI owners, build the system by combining data sources, then deploy and focus on performance improvement. Whistl followed agile principles with jointly defined scope and ran old and new warehouses in parallel for a week before switching over. FREJA worked with its distributor, Infotool, and added video tutorials to support self-service. Royal Lemkes did most of the migration itself, with a Dimensional Insight project manager helping it start. Expert Ireland began with a few stores and then made the reports required.
Where should a logistics team start?
Logistics deployments are customized and can scale up or down, so there is no single starting point. It is set with each customer during scoping. Published stories show typical first steps: CDTA began by defining its data strategy and KPIs with KPI owners, and Corrib Oil began by combining separate systems into one view to end manual Excel reporting.
