In recent years, cannabis has garnered significant attention for its therapeutic and recreational potential. While most people are familiar with THC (primarily delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or Delta-9 THC) and CBD (cannabidiol), there’s another cannabinoid that’s been making waves in the cannabis industry: delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as Delta-8.

This lesser-known compound has recently surged in popularity due to its unique properties, offering a milder experience compared to traditional THC, as well as providing a loophole in areas where marijuana isn’t legal yet.

Growing market

According to a recent report from cannabis analytics firm Brightfield Group, the market for Delta-8 THC products has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity over the past two years, generating over $2 billion in sales.

The report also highlights a significant overlap among users of CBD, Delta-8, and other newly developed cannabinoid products, with around 35% of CBD users having purchased psychoactive hemp-derived products in the last six months.

Additionally, in states where marijuana is legal, nearly a quarter of marijuana users have expressed interest in purchasing Delta-8 products in the future. As consumers continue to explore new options, there may be a gradual shift towards Delta-8, particularly if the cost difference remains favorable.

What is Delta-8?

Chemically similar to Delta-9 THC, the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, Delta-8 has a slightly altered molecular structure. This minor difference in structure results in a milder psychotropic effect, making it a promising alternative for those seeking a more balanced and less intense cannabis experience.

While Delta-8 is a naturally occurring compound found in small amounts in hemp and cannabis plants, the products available on the market are typically created through the chemical conversion of CBD into Delta-8 molecules.

Why it’s popular

Accessibility: In regions where marijuana and Delta-9 THC remains prohibited, Delta-8 has emerged as an accessible and cost-effective means to explore the psychoactive effects of cannabis. The market for Delta-8 is particularly active in states with stricter cannabis regulations, predominantly in the Southern regions of the United States.

Mild psychoactive effects: Delta-8 provides users with a milder high compared to Delta-9. It offers relaxation, euphoria, and a sense of calm without inducing anxiety or paranoia that some individuals may experience with higher doses of Delta-9.

Clear-headedness: Many users report that Delta-8 provides a clear-headed experience, allowing them to go about their daily activities while still enjoying the psychoactive benefits of cannabis.

Potential therapeutic benefits: Delta-8 is believed to have potential therapeutic benefits, although more research is needed to fully understand its effects. Some anecdotal evidence suggests it may help alleviate nausea, anxiety, pain, and appetite loss.

Legal status

The legality of Delta-8 THC can be complex and varies from country to country and state to state. In the United States, the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived products, including Delta-8. Because Delta-8 is derived from hemp and not marijuana, it is legal and unregulated at the federal level.

However, some states have implemented their own specific regulations or outright bans on Delta-8 in an effort to curb its consumption.

Quality and safety considerations

Delta-8 THC may not be the magic bullet that manufacturers claim it to be. In 2021, the American Chemical Society published their concerns regarding Delta-8, stating that very few products marketed as Delta-8 are purely so, containing various unknown by-products and other unwanted compounds.

When purchasing Delta-8 products, it’s crucial to prioritize quality and safety. Both retailers and consumers alike should look for reputable brands that provide third-party lab test results to ensure the product’s purity, potency, and absence of harmful contaminants.
