This year’s agenda includes more than 300 educational sessions and special programs for an expected crowd of 45,000. Are you busy planning your agenda for the show? Here are a few things to keep on your radar.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

One of the main themes of HIMSS this year is artificial intelligence and the potential it holds to transform healthcare in significant ways. In classic fashion, the reality is years away from day-to-day practical application. However, it’s certainly important to become familiar with the concepts, terms, and potential use cases. You’ll find several opportunities to do that from people who are at the forefront of applying AI to the challenges of healthcare.

The most valuable sessions tend to be the ones focused on “lessons learned” over the course of actual system deployments. This year’s agenda is replete with those. The past few HIMSS conferences have featured machine learning as one of the lead topics. Several of the sessions review the experiences of applying these techniques.

Population health

Population health has been a central topic during the last few years at HIMSS. However, to date, there has been a lot of talk about population health, but not much beyond that. It seems as though every vendor wants to bill its technology as providing a “pop health” solution, but doesn’t have the results hospitals are looking for. It will be interesting to see this year whether there is more clarity around the topic and real-life applications of pop health solutions.

Data visualization

The most practical advice may come from the sessions that review the success that comes from continually refining techniques that have been found to be effective over a decade or more of use on the front lines. Visualization and innovative ways to deliver information within clinical workflows are at the top of the list. Several sessions at the show will enable you to learn about what’s working best from the folks who are experiencing it firsthand.
