What is a Measure?

NOTE: Spectre Measures is available with a Spectre license. It is not the same as Measure Factory licensed functionality. When you have a Measure Factory license, the spectre measures command expects to use a factory script instead of a measures script. Use of Spectre with measures scripts is deprecated and customers are urged to upgrade to Measure Factory. For more information on what the purchase of a Measure Factory license provides, see Measure Factory Overview.

A measure is a value calculated using enhanced data, often from different systems, computed at a point in time, and displayed within an explanatory context. The capture and display of measures can support true data-driven decision making. Spectre includes a Measures Engine to support the definition and configuration of measures as well as the calculation and integration of those measures into the data sets for easy retrieval by DI clients such as DivePort and ProDiver.

In the following example, Spectre measures displays a typical utilization measurement, the acute average length of stay, with context to aid in interpretation: the time frame, expected and previous values, and a 12-month trend line. This example is from a hospital environment, but measures can collect and present similar data for any business line.

This measurement, if supplemented with definitions and related detail, can help users form hypotheses and draw conclusions. For example:

Such measures are often examined from different perspectives: as summary values for different dimensions, or as summaries for different time periods. For example:
