Sinds vorige week is heel Nederland, of eigenlijk heel de wereld, in de ban van de Olympische Spelen. Elke 4 jaar gaat Nederland er weer met grotere verwachtingen naar toe en steeds is er weer dezelfde discussie: hoe realistisch zijn de verwachtingen<\/a> en hoe goed doet Nederland het nou eigenlijk<\/a>?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Een definitief antwoord formuleren op de vraag hoe realistisch de medaillevoorspellingen zijn is lastig, maar de vraag beantwoorden hoe goed Nederland het doet kunnen we wel vanuit een iets ander perspectief: De verhouding populatie \/ medailles. Dus: Hoe scoort een land als we het aantal inwoners meenemen in de medaillespiegel, en hoe presteert ons land in d\u00e1t opzicht ten opzichte van anderen? Ik haalde de medaillespiegel van een open bron en de populatie per land downloadde ik in een CSV-bestand<\/a>, deze twee bronnen knoopte ik in een verloren uurtje aan elkaar in Diver.<\/p>\n

Wat valt op? Op moment van schrijven staat Nederland 11e, maar China, Groot-Brittanni\u00eb, en de Verenigde Staten voeren de ranglijst aan. De snelle conclusie is dus dat laatstgenoemde landen het heel goed doen, maar is dat ook zo? De VS, China en Groot-Brittanni\u00eb zijn relatief grote landen in de wereld en de vraag die rijst is: \u201cHoe verhoudt het aantal inwoners van een land zich tot de prestaties van dat land?\u201d Van een land met meer inwoners zouden immers ook meer medailles verwacht mogen worden.<\/p>\n

In de volgende tabel zetten we het aantal inwoners af tegen het (totaal) aantal medailles dat een land haalt:<\/p>\n

Wat valt nu op? Nieuw-Zeeland, met acht medailles (die ze haalden in Roeien, Kanovaren, Baanwielrennen, Atletiek en Rugby Sevens) doet het waanzinnig goed met 1 medaille per 554.799 inwoners. Grenada en de Bahama\u2019s doen het ook goed met ieder \u00e9\u00e9n medaille (de bahama\u2019s haalde deze trouwens met een fantastische actie van atlete Shaunae Miller bij de 400 meter). Nederland haalde op de medaillespiegel een 11e plaats, maar haalt in dit overzicht ‘slechts’ een 15e plaats, net boven de nummer 2 in de medaillespiegel: het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Belgi\u00eb vinden we pas terug op plaats 30, buiten bovenstaand overzicht. Van de top 4 in de medaillespiegel vinden we in deze top 26 alleen het Verenigd Koninkrijk terug. De VS staat op plaats 40 en China vinden we pas terug op plek 62, maar 8 plekken boven hekkensluiter Indonesi\u00eb.<\/p>\n
