Reading Time: 3 minutes

himss17HIMSS17 is underway, with more than 40,000 healthcare professionals converging on Orlando, Florida. With Day 1 of the conference now in the books, I wanted to share my first impressions of the show.

Of course, Dimensional Insight is also exhibiting at the show (booth #3335) and we have some exciting new products that we are demoing to attendees. I’ll also share some details on that at the end of this post.

Population Health

My first mission on Monday was to walk around the HIMSS17 show floor to see if I could identify any trends among exhibitors. What stood out was that everyone was talking about population health. HIMSS even hosted a Population Care Management Symposium on Sunday, which our Nora Lissy attended.

Right now, population health is certainly the buzzword du jour. However, many healthcare providers can’t quite wrap their heads around how to move the needle in the right direction. It will be interesting over the next few years to see which technologies bubble to the top in terms of helping organizations better understand population health and how to apply learnings to improve patient outcomes.

Machine Learning and Cognitive Computing

Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, gave the opening keynote yesterday at HIMSS17. She talked about cognitive learning and how it is becoming more mainstream in healthcare. In particular, she discussed how Watson is being used in genomics, as well as how different healthcare organizations are gaining insights by using cognitive computing.

She also discussed three decisions that healthcare IT professionals will greatly influence: 1) a cloud; 2) a data architecture platform; and 3) an AI platform. She talked about what IT users should look for in each of these solutions, emphasizing the need for security and solutions that support cognitive computing.

Coming Up at HIMSS17

Still on the speaking schedule at HIMSS17: on Thursday, former Speaker of the House John Boehner and Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell will be giving a keynote on “Political Perspectives on America’s Future”. It will be interesting to hear their perspectives on the future of the Affordable Care Act and how changes will impact healthcare IT.

Also on Thursday, “Shark Tank” investors Robert Herjavec and Kevin O’Leary will speak on healthcare innovation. In an interview with Healthcare IT News, Herjavec discussed how he’s very bullish on the healthcare market. He also discussed the need for robust cybersecurity in healthcare.

Dimensional Insight at HIMSS17

dimensional insight at himss17We are exhibiting in booth #3335 at the show, where we are providing demos of Diver Platform. Diver is now built on columnar databases instead of relational databases. That means users can now very quickly analyze large data sets. In addition, we are also demoing our new Measure Factory and Knowledge Bases to attendees. Measure Factory is our new inference engine that builds the different measures and KPIs that healthcare organizations need to support decision-making. The Knowledge Bases are comprised of these domain-specific pre-defined business rules. Each Knowledge Base, in areas such as hospital operations or ambulatory operations, contains hundreds of measures.

If you are interested in a demo or just want to say hi, please stop by our booth!
