We talk a lot about the importance of data governance here at Dimensional Insight. So when I read the Aberdeen research paper, “Smarter Healthcare: Analytically Fit, Operationally Efficient,” I was psyched to see actual stats on how important data governance is to hospitals and health systems.

Check out this gem from the report:

Top healthcare organizations are 3 times more likely to use data governance policies.

Whoa – that’s pretty big! If you want to dig a little deeper into the numbers, they show that 68% of top healthcare organizations have established policies in place for governing/controlling end-user data access, while only 24% of low-performing healthcare organizations have them.

Why is this all important?

Quite simply, because doing healthcare business intelligence and analytics is wicked hard (as we like to say here in Boston). The complexity of healthcare data is mind-boggling, technology is often outdated, and enacting change can be nearly impossible. Add to that pressures of regulations and oversight, and it’s easy to see why healthcare organizations feel as though they’re drowning in data, but can’t do anything valuable with it.

However, if health systems want to increase operational efficiency and ultimately improve patient care, it’s becoming increasingly clear that good analytics is key to success. We’ve discussed this in our previous posts in this blog series:
