EMC - A First-Timers Guide to Creating a Successful Enterprise BI Environment

Bob Petrillo manages the Technical Operations Team serving the Professional Services division of Global Services at EMC. This team is responsible for managing the BI initiative for the Professional Services group, including the use of Diver and DivePort. Petrillo and his team support field delivery, corporate teams, and executive management to help drive day-to-day operations and shape long term performance improvement strategies.

Coming up with a plan for implementing a successful enterprise BI environment is no easy task. It's a challenge that requires an understanding of the varied information needs of different users and a high level of automation so the right information can be delivered to the right audience in a timely manner. EMC, the world's largest vendor of enterprise information storage platforms and services, recently utilized DI's version 6.2 to roll-out a dashboard-based balanced scorecard (BSC) initiative for the company's 15,000-person Professional Services organization. Bob Petrillo, EMC's Corporate Technical Operations Manager, leads the team in charge of supporting the BI environment within EMC's Professional Services group and will discuss the challenges EMC faced in developing, deploying and maintaining a BI environment that would meet the needs of EMC's user community. Attendees will be given an insider's look at the process EMC used to deploy a BSC project - from deciding what KPIs to select, how to measure key metrics and strategies used to deal with an onslaught of information requests that resulted from a successful project roll-out.
Florida's Natural Growers - Using Intelligent Thresholds to Drive Performance Improvements

Gary DeWitt has been employed at Florida’s Natural Growers for 39 years. During his time there DeWitt has been responsible for successfully implementing an Information Technology department that boasts an operating budget that is almost one-half the industry average, zero software backlogs, and near 100% employee retention for the last ten years. The organization has an enterprise-wide Diver implementation that includes over 2,200 models that are integrated into every aspect of its business from sales and marketing to inventory management. Mr. DeWitt also chairs the Computer Information Systems Advisory Committee for Polk State College and is actively developing a 4-year business degree that focuses on a Business Intelligence discipline.

While the press and analyst community have focused their efforts hyping the merits of deploying enterprise-wide dashboards and balanced scorecards, Florida’s Natural Growers Information Systems department has taken a slightly different approach, termed ‘SmartBiz Analytics’, to streamlining the information delivery process to improve performance. By utilizing version 6.2 of The Diver Solution, DeWitt and his team have created a versatile exception reporting environment geared towards providing knowledge workers with the ability to focus their attention on critical areas of the business. DeWitt will discuss how organizations can use Diver as a management tool by building in intelligent thresholds and business rules into the BI environment that drives the information delivery process thus supporting strategic initiatives. While version 6.2 of The Diver Solution has streamlined the dashboard development process, deploying global dashboards with high-level summary views of performance metrics is still no easy task. Organizations with dashboard initiatives should take notice; rolling out a successful enterprise-wide dashboard or scorecard is something that requires a phased approach and an in-depth understanding of both business goals and user needs. Merry Bassi, a member of Methodist Medical Center’s Planning & Decision Support group, was tasked with creating dashboard views for Methodist’s management team that measured actual vs. goal performance on a number of care quality indicators – from hospital acquired conditions to critical lab results. Attendees will learn about Methodist’s approach to integrating multiple disparate data sources that feed the indicators present in the dashboard and how utilizing a phased approach from a data collection and integration standpoint allowed the organization to improve patient care and reimbursement levels.

Ben Alexander is the Chief Medical Information Officer at WakeMed Health & Hospitals, an 870-bed private, not-for-profit health care system based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to earning his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Alexander worked for several years in the hi-tech sector as a programmer including a stint at IBM where he focused on application development and database design. His corporate experience in the information technology arena combined with his background in pediatrics has given him a unique perspective on the role technology plays on improving patient care and quality.

Anders Jonsson is a statistician at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), Evaluation & Monitoring Department, Lessons Learned Section. He is also studying for a PhD in Public Health at Karlstad University. MSB supports societal preparedness for emergencies of all types. MSB coordinates across various sector boundaries and areas of responsibility. Anders Jonsson’s role is to develop the MSB’s collection and presentation of data useful for quality improvement.

The task of the MSB is to enhance and support societal capacities for preparedness for and prevention of emergencies and crises. When one does occur, MSB supports the stakeholders involved by taking the right
measures to control the situation. To collect and analyze lessons learned from international aid operations it is important to improve operations and avoid repeating mistakes. MSB's resources for international assistance is requested from the EU, UN and others. At any one point in time the MSB have 50-60 ongoing international operations, mainly in Africa, Asia and Europe. To support the process of continuous quality improvement, the authority has developed a web-based system ELLIOT (Evaluation and Lessons Learned from International Operations Tool). ELLIOT is developed using The Diver Solution in order to establish a reliable and systematic vehicle for data visualization and information delivery. The ELLIOT system provides users with a centralized area view data relative to preparedness and operations. This presentation will focus on how the Dimensional Insight provides MSB with the BI capabilities necessary for ELLIOT users to improve operations andoverall performance.

Like many Divers present at DIUC 2010, William Grant & Sons recently started the process of delivering information to their user community in version 6.2. In order to satisfy the constant flow of information requests from its group of suppliers, the organization is transitioning away from disseminating data via WebDiver in favor of the anytime, anywhere information access capabilities DivePort provides. Monica Rodriguez, Database Administrator, has been one of the key members of the BI implementation team at William Grant and oversees a majority of the deliverables that are now being created in version 6.2. Attendees will be given the opportunity to hear about the benefits William Grant is deriving by delivering information to users in the newest version of DI’s portal environment. Monica will explain the types of projects that are slated for roll-out and the goals they expect to achieve by using DivePort 6.2.

Reconstructing a Dashboard - A

Description: This is a hands-on session. Laptops will be provided. Version 6.2 includes a variety of enhancements to The Diver Solution's enterprise web portal interface, DivePort, which streamlines the dashboard development process. This session is designed for the person responsible for an organization's dashboard initiative and will provide attendees with a hands-on environment for learning how to reverse engineer a demo dashboard. Two sessions, each with their own unique dashboard to reconstruct, will be offered during the conference.
Data Integrator: Inputs & Non-Standard Data Feeds

Description: This is a hands-on session. Laptops will be provided. This hands-on workshop will give attendees an opportunity to interact with DI's ETL tool, Data Integrator, and will focus heavily on processing the different types of inputs. This session is designed strictly for a user that interacts with DI's Builder and Integrator components. During this two-hour session attendees will explore developing scripts to handle unstructured file formats capable of feeding a Model, using the Directory Input object, and other specialized scenarios.

The Visual Integrator version 2 is a completely new Windows application for quick and easy development and testing of scripts for the Data Integrator. This hands-on session, aimed at developers, consultants and programmers that are already familiar with creating Integrator scripts, introduces new features such as new object wizard, data column searching, filtered and iterative tests, object import/export, bookmarks, and more.

Join George Dealy, Vice President of Business Development, as he reviews Dimensional Insight’s Physician Performance Management (PPM) application. This application is used as a management tool capable of providing users with a succinct and clear snapshot of physician performance that can then be communicated directly back to each doctor and/or department head in order to improve care, lower cost, and increase revenue across the facility.

Role-based security and the typical basic user setup will be outlined. Topics covered include: User Profiles, Groups, Access Control Lists (ACL's), and Setting Limits and Deletes on data.
