Dimensional Insight sponsored the event for the second year. For us, this provided an opportunity to honor the contributions of our female leaders at Dimensional Insight, as well as the female leaders at our hospital and health system customers. Here are a few highlights from the event.

Power vs. powerful

In her keynote, Katie Stebbins, assistant secretary of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, talked about the difference between “power” and “powerful”. She noted that “power” is something personal that people wield over others. On the other hand, “powerful” is something that is enabling. Powerful people use their passion to make an impact for the public good.

Katie also talked about how women often don’t recognize their leadership qualities, saying, “We’re not always witness to our own power.” She discussed the importance of mentoring other women and sharing power with each other.

Mentorship vs. sponsorship

Maia Hightower, CMO of University of Iowa Health Care, presented on “The Diversity Algorithm: How to Boost Team Innovation in the Era of Big Data.” Maia presented some compelling statistics that showed the value of diverse teams. Teams with diversity actually have higher financial returns and greater productivity than non-diverse teams do.

Hightower also discussed the importance of not just mentoring women, but sponsoring women. The difference between the two is that mentoring is sharing ideas and helping others sharpen their skills, while sponsorship is identifying and promoting talent. It’s helping others see the leadership potential in women vs. just helping women work on their own leadership skills. Hightower also said that people should be selective in who they sponsor.

Why we sponsored the event

Susan Mays, vice president of customer services here at Dimensional Insight, had the honor of announcing the Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT award winners from the podium. As Susan noted in her remarks:

“We have chosen to support the Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT event because it supports one of Dimensional Insight’s key cultural values. At our core, we believe in the value of people. We put all of our resources into supporting our customers and into supporting our employees. This means supporting the contributions of everyone – including women – to healthcare IT.  While technology is important, it’s the people that drive innovation and transformation.”
